Every time the holidays roll around, I find myself just as excited for the leftover ham as I am for the holiday dinner itself! And who can blame me- there are so many ways to use leftover ham for amazing new meals.
What makes ham salad such a perfect choice is that it can be used in so many different ways! It's full of bright, fresh flavors and best served cold, making it the perfect snack to pull out of the fridge for crackers or a quick ham salad sandwich! It's even perfect with lettuce or mixed into pasta with a little extra mayo for a ham and macaroni salad.
So trust me- you and your family are going to love this easy ham salad recipe! Try it out and I know you'll be fighting for the last bite!
Ham Salad Ingredients
- Ham
- Hard boiled eggs
- Sweet relish
- Mayonnaise
- Celery
- Green onion
- Dijon Mustard
- Honey
- Salt and pepper
How to Make Ham Salad
- Dice the ham and slice the hard boiled eggs, then add them both to a food processor or blender and pulse until smoothly chopped. It should be a similar consistency to chicken or tuna salad.
- Wash and dice the celery and green onions and set them aside. Scoop the ham and egg mix into a large mixing bowl, then add the mustard, mayonnaise, relish, celery, onions and honey. Mix everything together well until smooth, creamy, and evenly mixed.
- Top with a sprinkle of salt and pepper, and give it one last stir. Serve with crackers, on bread, or mixed into your favorite pasta!
Ham Salad Recipes Tips
- While this old fashioned ham salad recipe calls for Dijon mustard, I highly recommend looking for Honeycup mustard! It's sweet and intense and will make your next ham salad a showstopper!
- Ham salad is at its best with leftover ham, but in a pinch, deli ham will work too!
- If you're not a celery fan, try swapping it out for cucumber, or a little green apple. You might find you love the extra fruity sweetness apple can bring!
- For an extra boost of flavor, try topping the finished salad with bacon crumbles!
Old Fashioned Ham Salad Recipe FAQs
Old fashioned ham salad is made with ham, mayonnaise, relish, mustard, green onions, and celery, with optional (but delicious!) hard boiled eggs. I add honey to mine for extra sweet flavor.
Hard boiled eggs are an optional addition to ham salad, but I highly recommend them! They add creaminess and lighten up the rich ham, and a little extra vitamin D never hurt anyone! If you don't have any hard boiled eggs on hand, this recipe can be made without them. I suggest adding a little more ham and celery to make up for it.
Ham salad can be stored in the fridge for 3-5 days, or frozen for up to 2 months. But if your family is like mine, there won't be any left after day one!
