  • Divide meat into 4 equal portions. Shape each into a patty slightly larger than the size of your burger buns.

  • Make an indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb. This will prevent them from bulging as they cook.

  • Place burger patties on the grill. Cook 5 minutes per side or until they reach your desired level of doneness (see: burger temperature chart). During the last minute of cook-time, add a slice of cheese to the top of each patty so it melts over the burger.

  • Lightly toast buns if desired. Place a burger patty on each bun, then top with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and cooked bacon (optional). Plus, a little extra BBQ sauce! Serve, and enjoy.

Notes

  • Classic toppings like lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles all make great choices for pairing with the BBQ sauce on this burger. However, you can also top it off with caramelized onions if you want to mix things up!
  • Be sure to work with clean grill grates.
  • My favorite barbecue sauce for these burgers is my homemade version. But, you can use your favorite bottled sauce if you don't have the time to make your own.
  • To check the internal temperature of your burgers, use an instant-read meat thermometer. For a medium-rare burger, aim for 130-135°F, and for a medium burger, 140-145°F.
  • Grill burgers over direct heat. For a smoky flavor, you can close the grill lid, but it isn't necessary.
  • If you have a smoker, you can also make these BBQ burgers using my smoked burger recipe and all of the same ingredients.
  • Use an 80/20 ground beef or ground chuck mix, not lean ground beef. Lean ground beef does not have enough fat and won't give you as juicy of a burger (unless you're aiming for less fat!).
