BBQ Hamburger
If you know anything about me, then you probably know I have made my fair share of burger recipes. From gourmet mushroom swiss burgers and poached egg burgers, to classic smash burgers or a loaded burger, if ground beef is in my refrigerator, you can guess what's on the menu.
Out of all of the hamburgers I've made at home, one of my top favorites is this BBQ burger recipe, without question. Not only is it packed with flavor and so juicy, but it's easy to make, and completely classic!
Whether you're grilling out or cooking on the stove, I promise you're going to love these barbecue burgers. Let's get cooking!
BBQ Hamburger Recipe Ingredients
- ground beef, 80/20
- burger seasoning
- homemade BBQ sauce - or BBQ sauce of your choice
- hamburger buns - brioche buns are a great choice
- American cheese - or cheese of choice, such as cheddar cheese
- lettuce
- tomato
- red onion
- pickles
- cooked bacon (optional, but who doesn't love a BBQ bacon burger?)
BBQ Burgers Recipe
- Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. In a large bowl, combine ground beef with BBQ sauce and burger seasoning. Mix until evenly incorporated, but don't over-mix.
- Divide meat into 4 equal portions. Shape each into a patty slightly larger than the size of your burger buns.
- Make an indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb. This will prevent them from bulging as they cook.
- Place burger patties on the grill. Cook 5 minutes per side or until they reach your desired level of doneness (see: burger temperature chart). During the last minute of cook-time, add a slice of cheese to the top of each patty so it melts over the burger.
- Lightly toast buns if desired. Place a burger patty on each bun, then top with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and cooked bacon (optional). Plus, a little extra BBQ sauce! Serve, and enjoy.
BBQ Hamburgers Tips
- Classic toppings like lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles all make great choices for pairing with the BBQ sauce on this burger. However, you can also top it off with caramelized onions if you want to mix things up!
- Be sure to work with clean grill grates.
- For BBQ burgers, the best side is always going to be french fries. Try my baked steak fries or air fryer steak fries!
- My favorite barbecue sauce for these burgers is my homemade version. But, you can use your favorite bottled sauce if you don't have the time to make your own.
- To check the internal temperature of your burgers, use an instant-read meat thermometer. For a medium-rare burger, aim for 130-135°F, and for a medium burger, 140-145°F.
- Grill burgers over direct heat. For a smoky flavor, you can close the grill lid, but it isn't necessary.
- If you have a smoker, you can also make these BBQ burgers using my smoked burger recipe and all of the same ingredients.
- Use an 80/20 ground beef or ground chuck mix, not lean ground beef. Lean ground beef does not have enough fat and won't give you as juicy of a burger (unless you're aiming for less fat!).
- Try my Carolina BBQ Sauce next!
BBQ Burger Recipe FAQ
You can mix BBQ sauce directly into the burger meat when making BBQ burgers, which gives them even greater BBQ flavor when cooked. Just be sure not to over-mix the meat, or they will be less juicy.
BBQ sauce can be mixed partly into the ground beef before making burgers, and can also be added as a sauce topping after they come off the grill.
