Steak Fries in Air Fryer
There are few things more satisfying than a plate of crispy steak fries and a juicy, classic burger. It's a tough combination to beat, especially if you have homemade dip like my burger sauce on the side!
Out of every method, my favorite is to make steak fries in the air fryer. It's fast and easy this way, and they turn out so crispy! Not to mention, not having to turn on the oven during the hotter months is a big plus.
This air fryer steak fries recipe uses pre-made frozen fries, but I'll show you how to make them from scratch just like my oven steak fries, too. You can use whichever suits you best! Enjoy!
Air Fryer Steak Fries Ingredients
- frozen steak fries
- garlic powder
- cayenne pepper
- onion powder
- sea salt
- paprika
- Parmesan cheese
- parsley flakes
To make fresh fries, you'll need about 5 russet potatoes rather than a bag of frozen fries.
How to Air Fry Fries
- Preheat air fryer to 400°F. Place frozen french fries in the air fryer basket and spread them out evenly.
- Air fry for 15-20 minutes. Optionally, shake the basket halfway through the cook time.
- Mix garlic powder, cayenne, onion powder, sea salt, paprika, Parmesan, and and parsley flakes together in a bowl.
- Once cooked, place fries in a large bowl. Let the fries cool just enough to handle, then drizzle with olive oil and season with fry seasoning. Using your hands, mix together to evenly coat all of the fries.
- Serve, and enjoy!
Homemade Steak Fries
If you want to make homemade steak fries to use for this recipe rather than using frozen, follow these instructions:
- Rinse potatoes well, and do not peel. Cut each potato lengthwise in half, then lay flat and cut lengthwise again into quarters, then once more into eighths.
- Soak the wedges in a bowl of cold water for 10-15 minutes.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F. While it heats, mix garlic powder, cayenne, onion powder, sea salt, paprika, Parmesan, and and parsley flakes together in a bowl.
- Drain the potatoes and pat them dry with paper towel or a large tea towel. Once dry, coat the potatoes with seasoning and place them in the air fryer basket without overlapping any fries.
- Air fry for 20 minutes. Optionally, you may flip the fries halfway through the cooking process or leave them for a bit longer if you want them to be even crispier.
- Serve, and enjoy!
Air Fryer Fries Recipe Tips
- You can use any fry seasoning you like for this recipe! Try making these fries with a spice mix that complements your meal, like Steak Seasoning or Tri-Tip Rub.
- These fries are best served with a dipping sauce. Mix together ketchup and mayo for a simple fry sauce, or serve with a more complex sauce like kimchi mayo.
- You shouldn't need to flip or shake the basket for your fries, but if you're using frozen fries, you can shake it halfway through the cook time to make sure they're all cooking evenly.

FAQ for Air Fryer Fries
All air fryers are different, so you may need to take extra steps if your fries aren't crisping up enough. The basket may be over-crowded, or you may need to preheat the air fryer for it to get hot enough to crisp the fries. Try preheating the air fryer, cooking in batches, and shaking the basket halfway through the cook time.
While you don't need to soak frozen fries, freshly cut potatoes should be soaked in water before air frying. This draws out the starch in the potatoes, which in turn will help them crisp up when cooked.
