Potatoes and Sausage
This potatoes and sausage recipe is a total life-saver to me. That might sound dramatic, but it's true! I love this dish and make it often. One night I decided to serve it as a side dish for my favorite pork chops recipe - only to totally overcook the pork chops on accident.
All I had left was this kielbasa and potatoes. It was too late to try and salvage the entree, so I served this dish as a main course with the sauce from the pork chops on the side, instead. And let me tell you... everyone was hooked!
Since then, I've made this sausage and potatoes recipe as a main dish more often than not. It works beautifully on its own, but it also stands out as a side dish for your favorite hearty dinners. I just know your family will love this dish as much as mine!
Sausage and Potatoes Ingredients
- Kielbasa sausage or smoked pork sausage, cut into short lengths
- Olive oil
- Baby potatoes
- Water
- Yellow onion
- Salt
- Pepper
- Frozen peas
- Red pepper flakes, optional - skip the black pepper if adding these!
How to Make Kielbasa and Potatoes
- Heat olive oil in a Dutch Oven or large pot with a lid over medium heat on the stove.
- Cut sausage into pieces and add it to the pot.
- Cook until the sausage begins to brown and caramelize.
- Add water to the pot along with potatoes. Stir, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan into the water.
- Slice onion and pile it on top of the other ingredients in the pot.
- Close the lid and turn the heat down to medium-low. Cook for 40-45 minutes, or until the potatoes can be pierced easily with a fork. You may need to add more water; see tips below.
- When the potatoes are ready, add in frozen peas. Cook a few more minutes until the peas are cooked through.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste, serve, and enjoy!
Sausage Potatoes Recipe Tips
- When cooking the potatoes, you may need to add more water. Check the pot occasionally to see if more should be added. Peeled potatoes will cook more quickly and also absorb more water.
- Kielbasa is typically salty, so taste the dish before adding more salt at the end.
- Italian smoked sausage may also be used, but the size and flavor of kielbasa make it a great choice for a main course dish.
- A little fresh parsley added to this dish goes a long way! Try adding a sprinkle of fresh parsley for extra color and flavor.
Kielbasa and Potato FAQ
Kielbasa sausage pairs with many different vegetables, from potatoes to bell peppers and onions. If you want to add a little color and additional flavor and texture to sausage and potatoes, you can mix in bell-peppers.
You can reheat cooked kielbasa sausage with potatoes in the microwave or on the stove in a pot or pan. If reheating in the microwave, cover the dish with a paper towel (sausage loves to pop!) and stir between short intervals until it's heated through so you don't heat it too much and dry it out. On the stove, simply reheat over medium-low heat until heated through.
