Beef Tenderloin Recipes FAQs
Filet mignon and beef tenderloin are both from the same cut of beef, but tenderloin is the whole cut, while filet mignon refers to steaks cut from the whole beef tenderloin.
It is the most tender cut of beef you will ever taste. The tenderloin sits under the ribs, next to the backbone. Beef tenderloin is one of the most expensive cuts of beef but in my opinion it is well worth it.
Beef Tenderloin on the Grill Recipe Ingredients
- Whole Beef tenderloin
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Garlic powder
- Sea salt
- Pepper
How to Grill Beef Tenderloin
- Bring beef tenderloin to room temperature by letting it sit out of the refrigerator for 30 minutes to 1 hour before cooking. Once ready to cook, preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
- Mix rosemary, thyme, garlic powder, sea salt, and black pepper in a bowl. Sprinkle both sides of the beef with seasoning, patting it down to coat it well. If you prefer a stronger flavor, you can do this the night before and refrigerate the tenderloin overnight.
- Grill for 30 minutes with the lid closed. Check often with a meat thermometer. For medium-rare beef tenderloin, grill until beef reaches an internal temperature of 135°F or 145°F for medium.
- Let the beef rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Serve, and enjoy!
Best Beef Recipes Tips
- Always let your beef reach room temperature before you grill it. It will cook more evenly throughout this way.
- Use a meat thermometer for best results.
- Let your beef rest for at least 10 minutes before you slice it.
- Use sea salt instead of table salt for best results. Sea salt is flakier and will give your beef tenderloin on the grill a beautiful crust.
- Don't forget, Garlic Butter makes everything better!

Beef Tenderloin Temperature
Follow our Beef Tenderloin Temperature Chart to find the perfect temperature for your beef. Use a meat thermometer when grilling so you know exactly when to pull it off of the heat.
Trimming Beef Tenderloin
Before grilling beef tenderloin, the beef should be trimmed of excess fat and the silver skin removed. You can ask your butcher to do this for you, or do it easily at home following our instructions!
- With your tenderloin laying flat, carefully cut just under the silver skin with your knife. Keep the blade close to the meat, without removing too much of the meat itself. Cut away from yourself.
- Pull the tissue tightly against the blade using your free hand for a clean cut. Cut through the tissue until you trim it off completely. Do the same for any large white sections on the beef, which is excess fat.
Equipment for Grilling Beef Tenderloin
- Grill and tongs
- Meat thermometer for best results
- Cutting board and carving knife
- Small bowl to mix seasoning blend
We always recommend using a meat thermometer to check the temperature of your beef when grilling. This will make it easy to know when your tenderloin is ready to take off the grill!

You never mentioned anything about turning the fillet, would it be just once at 15 minutes, or every 5 to 10 minutes???
Em Beitel says
Hi Domenic! We recommend grilling with the lid closed so you do not have to turn the tenderloin. If you do want to flip it, do so at the 15 minute mark. Thank you for your question!
brenda says
how long do i grill a 10 pound beef tenderlin
Em Beitel says
Hi Brenda! I would grill for about 2.5 hours with the lid closed (that's about 15 minutes per pound), but the most important step if you're grilling a tenderloin that large is to check the temperature periodically to make sure it's reaching the temp you want and isn't going to be overcooked. At the 2 hour mark I'd check the temperature, then check it again at 2.5 hours. Use our Beef Temperature Chart to find your desired degree of doneness and remove the beef from the heat 5 degrees below your desired doneness. Thank you for your question!

Hi, What temperature or setting range do you recommend the gas grill (BBQ) be set to as there's a wide temperature range from low to super hot. Also, on a multi-burner BBQ would you recommend turning off the burner that's directly under the tender loin and only burning the outer burners so it's indirect heat? Or do you leave all burners on?
Em Beitel says
Hi Larry! I would recommend the grill be on medium heat. Yes, you can grill the tenderloin on indirect heat for best results (turning off the middle burner and using the 2 side burners if possible). Enjoy!

I wish to grill 2 tenderloins so that I have at least 8 pounds. I may have to leave one in the oven and one in a grill box. ( possibly one 4 lb and one 5 lb). My basic plan is a temp for both at 405 degrees...oven and grill box... how long should I plan on cooking? And silly question from a rookie cook but old person.... do I leave the meat thermometer in the meat or stick it in from time to time to test?
Em Beitel says
Hi David! If you're able to have them both on the grill, they should grill just fine at the same time. For oven temps we have a Whole Beef Tenderloin recipe you may be interested in: https://bestbeefrecipes.com/whole-beef-tenderloin-recipe/ . Don't leave the thermometer in the roasts - just check in every 5 to 10 minutes towards the end of the cook time. For a 4 lb. tenderloin on the grill, grill for about 40 minutes - 50 for a 5 lb., but make sure you're checking the temp. For the roasted tenderloin, 15 minute sear at 450, then about 40 minutes at 325°F (4 pounds) or 50 minutes at 325°F (5 pounds).
Enjoy!
