Fried Rice with Ham
After cooking a ham, my favorite thing to do is to come up with what to make with the leftovers. This easy fried rice with ham is one of my go-to leftover ham recipes, and makes a simple but flavorful weeknight meal!
Your family will quickly fall in love with this ham fried rice! It can easily be whipped up as a quick weeknight dinner, and is so tasty, even the kiddos will be asking for seconds.
Fried rice is the best way to use any leftover rice you have, and the flavor ham adds is just delicious. Toss in your favorite vegetables like peas and corn, whisk in some scrambled eggs, and it is a perfect main dish ready in under 30 minutes!
Ham Fried Rice Ingredients
- cooked white rice
- chopped ham
- frozen peas
- frozen corn
- minced garlic
- olive oil
- green onions
- ham bone broth
- eggs
- soy sauce
One of the best things about fried rice is that it uses leftovers, so you can spend less time cooking rice. If you don't have any leftovers on hand, you can make it the same day and chill it before cooking, but I recommend using day-old rice for best results.

How to Make Fried Rice with Ham
- In a skillet over medium heat add olive oil and allow it to warm up. Once heated, add in minced garlic and cook for 2-3 minutes or until fragrant.
- Add in corn and peas and sauté for an additional 2-3 minutes.
- Next, add in chopped ham and allow to heat up, 2-3 minutes.
- Toss in cooked (cold) rice and cook for 5 minutes or until heated through.
- Top with sliced green onions, ham bone broth, and soy sauce. Mix them together completely.
- Carefully move your rice from the center of the skillet. Crack 4 eggs into the center of the skillet and whisk together to scramble.
- Once the eggs are scrambled, mix your rice and eggs all together. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Ham Fried Rice Recipe Tips
- Make sure you are using completely chilled rice. This will help the rice easily fall apart into individual grains instead of clumping or sticking together!
- Long-grain rice like jasmine rice is ideal for a fried rice recipe. The aromatic flavor of jasmine rice pairs well with the ham, too!
- Feel free to toss in carrots, broccoli, bacon, or whatever you have on hand! Stir-fried rice is the best for mixing in seasonal veggies. I love this dish with asparagus, too!
- A wok is awesome for stir-frying rice, but if you don't own one, that's alright. I use a regular large skillet for my fried rice and the texture is just as delicious.
- You shouldn't need to add any extra salt and pepper, but taste test before serving to adjust as you prefer.
- If you like, a little sesame oil may also be used for flavor. Add a teaspoon or two according to preference. Sesame oil has a strong flavor, so don't add too much!
Fried Rice with Ham Substitutes
- Any time you have an Easter or Christmas ham sitting in your fridge, this is one of the best recipes to make using the leftovers. But, outside of the holidays, you can also use store-bought ham slices or cubed ham instead.
- If you want to make this a gluten-free dish, replace the soy sauce with coconut aminos or tamari shoyu.
- Low sodium soy sauce may also be used.
- You can replace the ham bone broth in this dish with store-bought chicken broth, but I highly recommend making your own stock for the incredible depth of flavor it adds.
- If you prefer, you can use butter instead of oil. Use about 1-2 Tablespoons according to your preference.
Storing Ham Rice
- Refrigerator: Store fried rice with ham in an airtight container stored in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Reheat in a skillet for 5-8 minutes before serving!
- Freezer: Allow ham fried rice to cool completely before storing it in an airtight container. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Be sure to thaw the rice completely before reheating it in a skillet.
Ham and Rice Recipes FAQs
Ham fried rice uses a combination of leftover rice, diced ham, peas, corn, garlic, onion, seasonings, beaten eggs for texture, and homemade ham bone broth for additional deep flavor. Additional veggies may be added for extra flavor.
Ham fried rice will last about 2-3 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container. For best results, heat it up in a pan on the stove for about 5-8 minutes before serving.
