Instant Pot Ham and Beans
The instant I think about this ham and bean soup, I'm overcome with a wave of nostalgia. Bubbling soup filling the kitchen with warmth, the delicious aroma of leftover ham warmed in a broth of hearty beans, and windows pointing out towards the cold that can't reach me; it's a soup full of beloved memory.
What I don't miss about that old childhood soup is soaking beans and hours upon hours of waiting, but the Instant Pot came to my rescue! Now, this incredible leftover ham and bean soup is ready from start to finish in just one hour.
And it's so easy! The days of measuring out different beans, powders and seasonings are behind you. Just some broth, a bag of 15-bean soup mix, some ham and some vegetables are all it takes for a soup you'll be coming back for season after season.
Old Fashioned Ham and Bean Soup Ingredients
- Vegetable Broth
- 15-Bean Soup Mix
- Cubed Ham
- Onion
- Carrots
- Celery
- Garlic
- Butter
How to Make Ham and Bean Soup
- Wash and chop all of the vegetables into bite-sized pieces, and mince the garlic.
- Add the butter into your Instant Pot and set it to saute, then melt the butter.
- Once the butter is melted, add the chopped onion to the pot and saute until translucent and soft, about 5 minutes.
- Add in the minced garlic and saute until fragrant, about another minute. Then add in every other ingredient except for the ham, including the flavor packet from the soup mix!
- Set your instant pot to manual/high pressure, then secure the lid. Set it to cook for 40 minutes and be aware it will take 10 minutes to pressurize on top of that cook time.
- Once the timer has gone off, manually release the pressure and stir in the cubed ham. Let it sit for a few minutes so the ham gets warm and infused with flavor, then sprinkle with extra salt and pepper to taste, and serve!
Best Ham and Bean Soup Tips
- I highly recommend using a 15-bean soup mix for this recipe for the ultimate ease, but using other dried beans and your own seasoning mix will work too!
- Don't worry about sauteing the other vegetables! They will cook completely in the Instant Pot and infuse with amazing flavor, saving you time and effort in the process.
- This recipe works with store-bought cubed ham, but it's amazing with leftover ham! All the incredible flavors of your favorite ham glazes will make this soup a must-have!
- Remember not to add in the cubed ham early! Ham is almost always pre-cooked, and too much more cook time will make it tough and unpleasant. Adding it at the end just so it can heat through is all you need.
- Sausage and Bean Soup: If you can't get ham, a precooked sausage will work great, too! I love making this soup with smoked sausage cut into rounds. Saute the sausage rounds briefly and then add them at the end of the recipe just like ham for an extra delicious flavor.
Ham and Bean Soup FAQs
The glory of this easy ham and bean soup recipe is that the seasonings are already mixed for you in the 15-bean soup mix seasoning packet. If using your own mix, however, bean soups benefit most from salt, pepper, mixed dried herbs, and ground celery seed.
Using a pre-mixed 15-bean soup mix will give you the perfect blend of beans for ham and bean soup, without needing to buy extra varieties! However, if you can't find a mix, I recommend cannellini, navy, or great northern white beans.
Because the beans in this recipe soak and cook in the broth, they will excrete starches that naturally thicken the soup for you! For an extra thick soup, adding a cornstarch slurry or a few tablespoons of roux when the soup is done cooking and then letting it bubble for a few more minutes will work.
