Homemade Chili Seasoning
There is nothing more comforting than a warm bowl of homemade beef chili, especially after a long day. Chili was one of my favorite meals to come home to growing up, and I have fond memories of how it would make the house smell so strongly of all the delicious herbs and spices that go into the seasoning.
Homemade chili is one of my favorite meals to make for my kids, too - and now my grandkids! It's the kind of recipe everyone has their secret to making "just right", and what could be more important than the chili seasoning?
I know just how important it is to control the spice level of your chili - after all, I've been making it for my kids their whole lives! That's the best part about making homemade chili seasoning mix: you can customize it just how you like, and once you make your own at home, you won't go back to store-bought.
My chili seasoning recipe is best suited for beef, turkey, or chicken chili, as well as vegan bean chili. Plus, in addition to adding this seasoning mix to chili, you can add chili seasoning to vegetables, fish, or meat before roasting or grilling, or even sprinkle some in pasta for extra flavor!
What spices go in chili?
The most common chili spices are cumin, chili powder, and for some, paprika. Generally, a chili spice mix will have a savory blend of herbs and seasonings to create a spice mix that will elevate all types of meat. This makes choices like garlic powder, oregano, and cayenne great for mixing into chili seasoning.
Spices for Chili
- Garlic powder*
- Dried oregano
- Dried cumin
- Chili powder
- Ground black pepper
- Cayenne pepper
For my chili seasoning mix, I use a blend of the above spices. You can customize the heat levels by adjusting the amount of cayenne and chili powder used.
*When I'm making the chili right then and there, I'll use minced garlic instead of garlic powder. Otherwise, you can use garlic powder so you can store the seasoning for later.
If you want to use minced garlic instead of garlic powder, use 2 cloves.

Chili Seasoning Recipe FAQs
The secret to a good chili is all in the seasoning used! Adjust the spice levels and herbs used in your seasoning mix to find the perfect blend for your family's tastes. The trick is to season the meat after browning it, when it's in the pot with the other ingredients, so everything in the pot absorbs the flavor of the chili seasoning.
Chili seasoning is perfect for using with tacos. Use chili seasoning on tacos, chili, fish, and vegetables, or even sprinkle some on mac and cheese for extra flavor!
