Cowboy Butter Recipe
When I'm serving up a big plate of steak for dinner, my thoughts always drift to my road-trip days, stopping at diners and steakhouses after long days on the road. And everywhere I went with steak on the menu, I'd treat myself to something with cowboy butter!
It's a savory, spicy, tangy sauce that's rich, comforting, and so full of flavor. Use it as a garlic dipping sauce for steak, or spread it on burger patties! Let's be honest, with a sauce this good, what doesn't it taste great with?
And for all that flavor, it's quick, easy, and made using pantry ingredients. I promise, you probably have all the ingredients on hand right now, and it takes minutes to make!
What is Cowboy Butter?
Cowboy butter is a delicious dipping sauce for steak made from butter, mustard, lemon juice, Worcestershire, and spices to make a zesty, tart sauce. The butter melts into the steak perfectly so it soaks up all the flavor!
Cowboys Butter Ingredients
- Salted butter
- Lemon zest
- Lemon juice
- Garlic powder
- Red pepper flakes
- Sea salt
- Black pepper
- Dijon mustard
- Worcestershire sauce
- Fresh Parsley
Recipe for Cowboy Butter
- Melt the butter either in a saucepan over medium heat or in the microwave. If using the microwave, make sure to heat it in short 15-second bursts so it doesn't pop and spatter!
- Chop up the parsley and zest the lemon, then add the rest of the ingredients to the melted butter. Whisk well until completely combined.
- Pour over the steak before it's cooked, or dip the steak bites in for a delicious treat!
Compound butters are great, especially my garlic butter. This butter mixture will blow your mind!
Cowboy Butter Recipes Tips
- Because it's a butter-based sauce, this delicious Western sauce can be used to baste steak, too!
- Let this sauce thicken in the fridge and then spread it on toast, or rub it on raw meat like a butter rub for incredible flavor.
- If you want your sauce a little sweeter, add a bit of honey! It'll melt into the warmed butter perfectly and thicken alongside it for chilling later.
- If you're using this sauce to dip raw steak in before cooking it, set a portion aside for use later to avoid cross-contamination.
Cowboy Butter FAQs
Steak benefits from rich, creamy sauces like butter sauce or bearnaise, where the main ingredients are butter and flavorings! As steak is naturally rich and flavorful, it benefits from strong flavors such as lemon juice, vinegar, and chili, which are powerful enough to not get overshadowed by the beef, but not so cloying you can't taste the meat.
Butter sauce is made from melted butter and seasonings, and the rest is up to you! Typically it's paired with a strong flavor such as garlic, lemon juice, vinegar, or herbs, and can have cream added as a thickener. For this cowboy butter, mustard is used to thicken the sauce.
You can serve this recipe over chicken or vegetables too! It is truly the most versatile sauce you will make.
