Easter Ham Recipe
There are so many amazing ways to cook ham- trust me, I've tried more than I can count! And yet year after year, I find myself coming back to a classic ham in the oven. It's just so easy, and so, so good!
My favorite thing about baking precooked ham in the oven is that most of the cook time is hands-off, so you can start it early and have plenty of time to whip up some delicious sides.
And best yet, you'll never need to go buy expensive ingredients or appliances to make this perfect ham. The glaze is full of pantry staples and so long as you have an oven, you're all set to make some of the most delicious ham you'll ever eat!
Baked Ham Ingredients
- Bone-in ham, whole or spiral-cut
- Chicken broth
- Honey
- Unsalted butter
- Brown sugar
- Garlic powder
- Black pepper
How to Cook Ham in the Oven
- Preheat the oven to 325°F. Place the ham cut-side down on a roasting pan and tent with foil. Bake for 1 hour.
- While the ham bakes, prepare your glaze! Melt the butter in a saucepan or in the microwave in 30-second intervals. Add the honey, brown sugar, garlic powder and black pepper in a small mixing bowl, then add the melted butter and mix until combined.
- Remove the roasting pan from the oven when one hour has passed, leaving the oven on. Take off the foil and brush the surface of the ham with glaze, making sure to separate each slice (if spiral-cut) to brush each slice with glaze as well.
- Pour the chicken broth into the bottom of the roasting pan, to make sure the ham stays moist while finishing cooking. Without covering the ham, return the roasting pan to the oven and bake for 30 additional minutes.
- Remove the pan from the oven, slice if necessary, and serve!
Baked Ham Recipes FAQs
No matter what you heat the ham in, the best way to cook ham is to tent the ham in foil during the first part of the heating process, then add glaze to the ham and liquid to the bottom of the pan for the second half. This will keep the ham moist and make sure it's packed with flavor.
Ham needs to be covered for the first hour of baking time, or else it runs the risk of drying out. The best way to do this is to tent it with foil.
How Long to Bake Ham
Each cut of ham is different, and requires a slightly different cooking time! The goal is to reach the 140°F internal temperature requirement without drying out the meat or overheating it to the point of being tough and chewy.
- For whole precooked hams that weigh 10-18 pounds, cook at 325°F for 15-18 minutes per pound.
- For half-precooked hams at 5-10 pounds, cook at 325°F for 18-24 minutes per pound.
- For spiral-cut precooked hams, cook at 275°F for 10 minutes per pound.
