Soups with Ham Bone FAQs
Ham bones are huge, hearty bones with lots of meat, so when you're wondering what to do with a ham bone, your first thought should be soup! Simmer the bone with bay leaves, vegetables and plenty of water to make a delicious and flavorful stock.
Ham bones are great for stock, so make sure to store yours correctly! In a sealed bag or container, ham bones will last for 5 days in the fridge, or up to 4 months in the freezer. I like freezing mine until I'm ready to make stock, as you can put them right in the pot frozen.
Ham hock and ham bone are different cuts and thus different bones, but they can be used exactly the same way for soups! Both are typically large, meaty bones that have been smoked before being sold. The only difference is that ham bone tends to have more meat on it.
Typically, even a large ham bone should only be used once to make stock. However, a very large, meaty bone can make a ton of stock, so it may be enough for two or more pots of soup!
Ham Bone Recipes
For years, I always discarded the ham bone when all the meat had been cut away and served. Nowadays, I shudder to think of how much amazing food was wasted just because I didn't know how to utilize the hambone for stock!
And trust me, you've never had ham soup until you've had it using home made ham stock! Once you make it, you can use it in any recipe that calls for chicken broth. I especially love it in gravy and soup! Use it instead of broth or drippings in these recipes, and you're going to be amazed.
