    Meatloaf Sauce

Like meatballs, just about everyone has their own homemade meatloaf recipe they covet and turn to time and time again. I have honestly made so many meatloaf recipes trying to find that "perfect" one, from classic Italian meatloaf to slow cooker meatloaf and even cheesy keto meatloaf, only to come to a simple conclusion:

The perfect meatloaf is really more about the meatloaf sauce!

You want that gorgeous, easy-to-make meatloaf that's packed with flavor and won't disappoint you by drying out, right? Then you need to try this easy glaze for meatloaf. It only takes 2 ingredients and a handful of seasonings to add the perfect flavor to any meatloaf recipe!

Try making this meatloaf sauce recipe the next time your family is craving meatloaf, and I guarantee you're never going to want to make it any other way. If you need the perfect meatloaf topping, this is the one.

    Meatloaf Sauce Recipe Ingredients

    • Tomato paste
    • White vinegar
    • Meatloaf seasoning: dried mustard, salt, paprika, dried basil, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder

If you're mixing your meatloaf sauce into the beef, I recommend also using olive oil, parmesan cheese, eggs, and milk.

    Glaze for Meatloaf Tips

    • If you're baking meatloaf in the oven, add the glaze in the last 10-15 minutes of cook time to allow it to caramelize for the best flavor. I like to add two layers of meatloaf sauce: one at the beginning of the cook time, and another in the last 10-15 minutes.
    • The meatloaf seasoning used in the glaze can be made months ahead of time and stored in a jar.
    • Use a pastry brush or the back of a spoon to glaze meatloaf evenly for best results.
    • Always let meatloaf rest at least 15 minutes before slicing it so it has time to set.

    Meatloaf Topping Recipe FAQ

    When should you glaze meatloaf?

For best results when baking meatloaf, add the glaze in the last 10-15 minutes to give it time to caramelize in the oven. If it looks like it might burn, wrap the meatloaf to prevent burning. You can also add a bit of glaze at the beginning of the cook time to layer the flavor. For methods like slow cooker or Instant Pot meatloaf, glaze at the beginning of the cook time so the flavor of the glaze can seep into the meat. I like to brush on a little more at the end.

What can I use instead of ketchup for meatloaf glaze?

Instead of ketchup, this meatloaf glaze recipe uses tomato paste, which has a nice strong tomato flavor. Ketchup tends to be sweeter with added sugar content, so if you want a sweeter glaze, use ketchup.
