Sirloin Steak Recipe
There's nothing quite like a juicy, sizzling steak being cooked on a hot grill during the summer. The sound, smell, taste, and everything in-between are the best!
Sirloin steak is a great option for a larger, more affordable steak that's packed with hearty beef flavor and tenderness. And the best part about Grilled Sirloin Steak? It's so easy with practically no clean-up. Season, rest, and grill - that's it!
Don't worry if you don't have a grill or if it isn't grilling season. You can easily make this recipe for sirloin steak in a grill pan on the stove, too!
Grilling Sirloin Steak Ingredients
- Sirloin steaks
- Lime juice
- Fish sauce
- Garlic ginger paste
- Salt and pepper to taste
For this grilled sirloin steak recipe, I use an Asian-inspired marinade complete with lime juice, fish sauce, and garlic ginger paste. It is truly delicious.
You can also use my Asian steak marinade or any marinade you like best, such as my chuck steak marinade or London broil marinade.
How to Grill Sirloin Steak
- In a small dish, make the steak marinade by mixing together lime juice, fish sauce, and garlic ginger paste.
- Season the steaks to taste with salt and pepper, then pour the marinade over them in a bowl. Cover, and allow to soak for at least 20 minutes.
- Place a griddle pan or skillet over medium heat, or an outdoor grill over direct medium-high heat (350°F-400°F). When hot, carefully add the marinated steaks. Cook on each side for 3 to 4 minutes for a pink middle.
- Remove the steaks from the pan or grill, and wrap them loosely in foil to rest for at least 8 minutes. Slice thinly against the grain to serve using a sharp knife.
Grilled Sirloin Tips
- Let the steaks come to room temperature while marinating for 20 minutes. This ensures they have time to soak up the marinade and cook through evenly.
- Don't move the steaks or flip them while they cook. If they begin to smoke a lot, reduce the heat slightly.
- Let your steaks rest after cooking. Keep them loosely wrapped in foil for 8 minutes of resting time.
- See my guides on Tenderizing Steak and Salting Steak for tips on how to achieve the most tender steak no matter what cut you're working with!
How Long to Grill Sirloin Steak
Sirloin steaks are typically thin and cook quickly. Grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side until cooked through but still pink in the middle, then allow it to rest for at least 8 minutes covered in foil. This is for medium-rare steak.
For best results when cooking steak, always use a meat thermometer and follow my steak temperature chart to reach your desired degree of doneness. It makes it so much easier to grill steak perfectly!
Degree of Doneness | Internal Temperature |
---|---|
Rare | 125°F - bright red in the middle |
Medium-Rare | 135°F - warm red in the middle |
Medium | 145°F - warm pink at the center |
Medium-Well | 150°F - slightly pink at the center |
Well Done | 160°F - little to no pink throughout |
What temperature should the grill be?
Sirloin steaks are thin, and cook quickly. Heat the grill to about 350°F to 400°F and don't close the lid.
If you're cooking the steaks in a grill pan on the stove, heat to medium.
What is grilled sirloin steak good for?
Use grilled sirloin steak to make steak nachos, beef kabobs, steak stir-fry, sirloin steak salads, and so much more.
It is also delicious on its own, sliced with a side of roasted potatoes and steakhouse mushrooms. Top it all off with a compound butter, and you have a perfect meal!
Sirloin Steak Recipes FAQs
Sirloin steaks are typically cut from the primal loin, or the upper portion of the cow that runs under the backbone. Sirloin steaks can also be called boneless top sirloin steaks, or center-cut steaks. For more info, check out my post on steak cuts!
Sirloin steak is a perfect cut for grilling, as it is lean, but still has great tenderness and beefy flavor. For best results, you can cook sirloin steak either on the grill outside or in a cast iron grill pan on the stove.
How to Store Sirloin Steak
- Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
- Freezer: Store in an airtight container or vacuum-sealed bag for up to 3 months. Label with the freezing date!
How to Reheat Sirloin Steak
- Microwave: I recommend slicing the steak before reheating and transferring it to a microwave-safe plate. Microwave for 30 seconds, then in 15-second intervals as needed.
- Skillet: Over medium heat, add sliced steak and stir often until warmed through.
- Oven: Transfer steak to a baking sheet and cover with foil, reheat at 350°F for about 10 minutes or until warmed through.
- Air Fryer: Reheat steak in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-5 minutes (depending on the thickness of your steak).

- Season the steak with salt and pepper to taste, set them in a bowl or deep plate, then pour the steak marinade over top. Cover, and allow to soak for at least 20 minutes.

Notes
- Remove the steaks from the fridge and place them in a bowl at least half an hour before you plan to cook them. This allows time for the marinade to soak in and for the steaks to come up to room temperature.

- It is very important to let your steaks rest after pan frying. Keep them loosely wrapped in foil for the 8 minutes of resting time. This will keep them hot but allow them to rest as necessary.
