Nicole says
Where did you find sugar free tomato paste? I am making this recipe tonight but don’t see any in stores.
Em Beitel says
Hi Nicole! The can itself might not say 'sugar-free' on the front, but generally the organic tomato paste varieties won't have any sugar added (it will say no sugar added on the back of the label). You can also order tomato paste if you're not able to find it! Sugar-free ketchup works too! Hope this helps - please enjoy!
Linda Holland says
I don't like the bitter taste of tomato paste. Can I use tomato sauce. Do I drain the hamburger grease or leave it in?.
Em Beitel says
Hi Linda! You can absolutely use tomato sauce if you prefer. Tomato paste has a thicker consistency, though, so a better choice might be ketchup or tomato puree. Please enjoy!
Ernesto Fuentes says
Hello, do you drain the grease from pan after you're finished browning the meat? Thank you
Em Beitel says
Hi Ernesto! There is no need to drain the beef! Thank you for your question and please enjoy!
Kodi says
Be extra careful using ketchup!! There is/or can be a lot of sugar in ketchup. I am actually going to try this recipe and use mustard. As there are no carbs in mustard and so many variations of mustard you can use. Additionally, I'm thinking of substituting the green beans for onions and a bit of jalapeños. This is a GREAT recipe I just would rather put my carbs where I would enjoy them more. Any advice in my substitutions?
Em Beitel says
Hi Kodi! We recommend sugar-free ketchup as a substitute, rather than regular ketchup. Mustard as a substitution sounds like a great idea to me, though the recipe already calls for Dijon and you may want something a little more sweet to balance it out. If you're concerned about the tomato, you could also use less of it and more mustard to balance it out to your liking. Onions and green beans sound like great substitutes! I hope you enjoy it!
Lisa McBroom says
Should it actually be a 9 x 13 pan and not 8 x8? Thank you
Em Beitel says
Hi Lisa! Yes, that was an error on our part. We recommend a 9x13 pan. Thank you!
Johnie Pitts says
I make this same recipe except I spread mashed potatoes over the top then I put it in the oven at 375° for 45 minutes. I know to be "Keto" correct you wouldn't use the mashed potatoes but I've been fixing this for my family for years. It's a family favorite
Em Beitel says
That sounds absolutely delicious! If you're not on a keto diet that sounds like a perfect way to enjoy this dish. Thank you for sharing with us, Johnie!
Gail Patterson says
You could still be keto using caulimash. Both ways sound great!
Janet says
Cooked turnip that has been seasoned and put in a food processor works great as a potato substitute to keep keto as well. 🙂
Em Beitel says
That's a fantastic tip, Janet. Thank you for sharing it with us!
Kim says
You could also do a cauliflower mashed on top then with shredded cheese
Emily O’Brien says
You didn’t answer Lisa Holland’s 2nd question about whether to drain the grease from the meat or leave it in. I,too, would like an answer? Thank you for your consideration.
Em Beitel says
Hi Emily - I apologize! There is no need to drain the beef. Thank you and please enjoy!
valerie says

it is recipes like this makes it easy to do keto.
Em Beitel says
Thank you so much, Valerie! We're so glad you and your family enjoy it!
Cindy Benson says
Do you have to add the heavy creme? Thanks
Em Beitel says
Hi Cindy! You can leave out the heavy cream if you wish. Thank you for your question!
Dolores says
Do you need to use eggs? I do not like eggs
Em Beitel says
Hi, Dolores! You can leave out the eggs if you wish. Thank you for your question!
Mary says
Do u drain the canned green beans
Em Beitel says
Mary, thank you for your question! We recommend draining the canned green beans.
Peggy says
Can I use par boiled fresh green beans?
Em Beitel says
Yes, absolutely! Par-boiled fresh green beans should work perfectly in this dish. Thank you for your question!
Jordan says
Husband loved this, thank you!
Em Beitel says
Thanks so much, Jordan! That's awesome!
Lee Ann says
Hi! Can I make this in a crockpot? I’m camping and don’t have an oven. Thanks!
Em Beitel says
Hi Lee Ann! We don't recommend making this dish in a crockpot. Since it's keto and doesn't have pasta or potatoes, it'd become mushy in the slow cooker. Thank you for your question and enjoy camping!
Tera says
What is the serving size?
Em Beitel says
Hi Tera! We cut this into 8 slices, so it'd be 1 slice out of those 8.
NewToKeto says
Amazing!
This recipe is so easy to make and utilizes ingredients that I always have on hand. I make this about once a week and my family doesn't get tired of it. While trying to find something to cook for family that was visiting from our of town my husband suggested I make this and it was a hit, I had to share the recipe.
This is perfect just the way it is but after making it so many times, I started adding canned diced tomatoes.
Em Beitel says
That is so amazing! Thank you so much for sharing with us - adding diced tomatoes sounds delicious. We're so glad you and your family enjoy it!
Joyful says
Does this do well being frozen? Thanks.
Em Beitel says
It does! Prepare and layer it in the baking dish as instructed. You can either freeze it before baking, or after.
If you want to freeze it before baking, simply freeze it tightly wrapped in plastic wrap and foil labeled with the freezing date. When ready to cook, add an additional 15 to 20 minutes to the total baking time. You can bake it straight out of the freezer this way.
If you want to freeze it after baking, let it cool completely before storing it. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, then foil, and label with the freezing date. When ready to enjoy, thaw it in the fridge overnight, then heat it back up for 15 to 20 minutes in the oven at the original baking temperature.
Lynn says
We’re not a fan of green beans so we used asparagus cut up. And instead of using one spoon of a whole can of tomato paste are used catch up. Turned out awesome. Definitely going to be one of our favorites going forward!
Em Beitel says
That's awesome, Lynn! So glad you enjoyed it!
Karlene says
I made the recipe and I must say it was delicious. My only regret it that I didn't double the recipe. My entire family loved it. Thanks for sharing.
Em Beitel says
That's awesome, Karlene! We're so glad you and your family enjoyed it!
Nathan Payne says
I used lean ground beef and frozen green beans but my casserole ended up with so much grease it was over the cheese. I read previous comments saying to not drain the beef but I think it is a necessity.
Mary Neumann says
Can I use okra and broccoli instead of green beans?8
Em Beitel says
Hi Mary! Yes, absolutely! You can use any vegetables you would like. Have fun and please let us know how it turns out!
Eric Powell says
I made this tonight with whole green beans and it turned out great. Terrific recipe, I am going to try broccoli next time. That should decrease the carb count even more!
Em Beitel says
That's awesome, Eric! We're so glad you enjoyed it! Broccoli sounds great in this dish.
Linda says
If substituting broccoli for the green beans — should it be cooked first? Thanks.
Em Beitel says
Hi Linda! It should be fine cooking with the casserole in the oven. Broccoli doesn't take much time to roast, so you can add it to the casserole as is and it will cook with the rest of the meal. Though if you'd like, I think it would probably also be fine to boil it ahead of time if you aren't sure. But I wouldn't say that's necessary at all.
Linda Wood says
Can you make this ahead? In other words, can you make it early in the day, refrigerate, then bake?
Em Beitel says
Hi Linda! You could definitely make this earlier in the day, then bake later. That would work out perfectly. I would store it in the baking dish, wrapped in plastic wrap so it's ready to bake when you need it.
Carolyn m Malkowski says
Sounds Great making this tonight well freeze the rest because it's just me !! thank you
Em Beitel says
Enjoy! We hope you love it!
cheryl says
Wow! This is superb! I’m already drooling over it. I'm definitely gonna make this next time I get ground beef. But sharing just a little thought, you can use ghee in place of olive oil. Ghee instantly adds to the flavor and its nutty aroma enhances the taste!
Em Beitel says
That's a great tip, Cheryl! Thanks very much, and enjoy!
Brigid A says
Very good keto recipe! I added onions and 2cloves of garlic to my meat! Excellent!
Thank you!
Em Beitel says
Awesome, Brigid! We're so glad you enjoyed it!
Joselyn says
This dish was a hit! I will be adding it to my rotation. I drained the fat from my beef (I used 80% lean beef) and cooked a chopped onion into it before assembling the casserole. Quick, tasty and everyone was full. I'm thankful I didn't have to make any side dishes. Though, I put some fries in the air fryer for myself and stepdaughter since my husband is the one following the keto diet 😉
Isabel Laessig says
This is wonderful to hear, Joselyn. We're so glad you and your family enjoyed it! Thank you for your comment!
NewToKeto says
I'm just coming back to say that I still make this regularly and my family still loves this dish!
I have small children so I have to make the most of my time. I always make this early in the day (morning nap time for the kids) and cover it in the fridge. Then all I have to do is pop it in the oven 30 minutes before dinner time.
Thanks for the great recipe!
Em Beitel says
This is wonderful - we're so glad to hear it! Thank you so much.
