🧀 Best Cheese for Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes
When it comes to making a classic Philly cheesesteak recipe, it's always up for debate what cheese you should use. In this recipe, we use classic American cheese and cook it right into the sloppy joe mix. It tastes amazing!
If you prefer, you can use a different type of cheese. You should always choose a softer cheese that melts well. Provolone, Swiss, or a shredded cheddar cheese are great options.
We love American cheese because it melts so easily, but you can be a true Philadelphian and use Cheez Wiz!
🍔 Hamburger Buns for Cheesesteak
We serve up this pressure cooker sloppy joe Philly cheesesteak recipe onbrioche rolls. Brioche uses butter, eggs, and milk, which makes it softer, moister, and richer than almost all other breads. But of course, you can use your favorite hamburger buns, too!
You could even make sliders by using Hawaiian rolls, like we do with our Philly Cheesesteak Sliders and Bacon Cheeseburger Sliders! Making sliders is perfect for tailgating or a game day party.
🧂 Seasoning
To season Philly cheesesteak with ground beef, we use a mix of salt and pepper and Italian seasoning. Italian seasoning gives the beef that perfect Philly cheesesteak flavor!
If you like, you can add a little kick by adding some chili flakes. 🔥
👪 Serving Size
On regular size hamburger buns, you can make about 6 sandwiches following this Instant Pot recipe. Perfect for feeding a family of 4 with leftovers, or a small gathering!
TIP—Serving a larger crowd? Try using Hawaiian rolls and making sliders! By using smaller rolls, you can make about 12 sliders using this recipe.
🥗 What do you serve with Philly Cheesesteak?
The best sides for Philly cheesesteak sloppy joes are simple potato recipes like chips, potato wedges, or fries. Other great choices are potato salad, coleslaw, or a simple vegetable salad.

Instructions
- Set your Instant Pot to saute mode. Once hot, add 1 Tbsp. olive oil. When it heats and begins to shimmer, add 1 cup chopped green pepper and 1 cup chopped onion, as well as 1 Tbsp. minced garlic or garlic paste. Saute for 2-3 minutes or so.
- Add 1 lb. ground beef and stir, cooking until it browns.
- Once browned, add in 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce and then 1 Tbsp. flour. Stir to incorporate. Finally, season with 1 tsp. Italian seasoning and salt and pepper to taste.
- Set your Instant Pot to high pressure for 5 minutes. Once done, carefully quick release the pressure. We always do this holding a hand towel.
- Once done releasing pressure, open the lid and add in 6 slices of American cheese. Stir to incorporate until the ground beef mixture reaches a creamy consistency.

You don't drain the fat from the ground beef?
Em Beitel says
Hi Susan! We don't drain the ground beef. You can if you prefer, but there's no need to. Thank you for asking!
Linda Swoveland says
My husband loves a good Philly cheese steak sandwich and I know he's going to beg me to make this often! I'd like to use sharp cheddar cheese but not sure how much? Can you help me with this?
Thank you
Em Beitel says
Hi Linda! We're thrilled you're going to try this recipe! You can use 1.5 cups of shredded sharp cheddar cheese. Thank you for your question!
Rosie M. says
I do not have an Instant Pot. Can this be made in a slow cooker, or even a dutch oven? Time and temps please. Thank you.
Em Beitel says
Hi Rosie! Yes, it can be. Cook in a slow cooker on high for 2 to 3 hours, or low for 4 to 6 hours. Mix the cheese in at the end just like you would with the Instant Pot version. For the Dutch Oven, I would follow all of the instructions for sautéing on the stovetop over medium-high heat, then transfer to the oven for 2-3 hours at around 300 degrees.
Prince says
Why do you use an instant pot? Would it still come out good cooking in a skillet?
Em Beitel says
Hi Prince! We use an Instant Pot because it's a quick, easy, and hands-free way to incorporate those flavors into the ground beef, but yes, you could absolutely make it using a skillet. Let the Worcestershire cook down a bit and stir until the flour completely disappears. Thank you for your question!
Sandra L Hrouda says
I would have left a five star rating because it was so good, but it burned in my Instapot! I believe it was lack of liquid. To my knowledge you need 1 1/2 C of liquid in the pot.. How could this recipe succeed?
Em Beitel says
Hi Sandra! I'm glad it was tasty! I'm not sure why this would happen - we didn't experience a burn notice when we made it. However, if I had to guess, it could potentially be the fat content in our beef was higher than the beef you used, so there was more liquid created in the pot by the beef. The next time you make it, if you're worried about it burning again, I would say you could either use water or a beef broth if you prefer, to balance it out. The broth will of course alter the flavor, but as long as you monitor salt levels it should be just fine and most likely very yummy. If you do, please let me know how it turns out!
