Hamburger Soup Recipe FAQs
All of the ingredients for this Instant Pot beef soup are gluten-free.
Please Double-check the beef broth. Some varieties may contain gluten.
Hamburger soup is a perfect make-ahead freezer meal. Store it in an airtight container.
Leave about 1-2 inches of space above the soup in the container as the liquid may expand as it freezes.
You can also freeze this soup in freezer bags.
Yes, you can make slow cooker hamburger soup easily! Using all the same ingredients, add everything to your slow cooker, stir to mix, then cook on high for 3 to 4 hours or on low for 6 to 8 hours, until the potatoes are nicely soft.
Ground Beef Vegetable Soup Recipe Tips
- I always use extra lean ground beef because it has less fat. This will help you to skip draining the fat. There's still a little bit of fat left, it adds flavor to the soup. If you do use fattier ground beef, you will need to drain some of the fat so the soup doesn't have too much oil.
- You can use fresh vegetables instead of canned vegetables if you prefer. Just add them in at the same time as the carrots and potatoes.

Served last nite to our ladies card group and they all gave me a thumbs up!! Please it isn't full of calories - maybe the bread we had was but not the soup. Followed the recipe with a few adjustments ---
Used Rotel instead of the regular diced tomatoes, whole can of mexicorn,
green beans & 1/2 can of peas.
I did not use salt or pepper I let the ones eating decide to salt & pepper.
Will make again! I might try frozen veggies, was afraid to try this time because I was serving to others.

Hi Debbie! We are SO glad you enjoyed it. You can definitely use frozen veggies. Thank you so much for your feedback - your changes sound delicious!
Rea says
If you don't have beef broth can you use something els or just water ? Or no?
Isabel Laessig says
You can substitute chicken broth or any other broth you may have on hand. You can use water if you have beef bouillons to add to it to create a broth.
Sandra Goodwin says
Use Better than bouillon, beef flavored. I always use frozen veggies when possible. So much better.

I have only crock pots if I use crock are directions different?
Em Beitel says
They are, but it's easy! Add the ingredients to your slow cooker, stir to mix, then cook on high for 3 to 4 hours or on low for 6 to 8 hours, until the potatoes are nicely soft. Thanks for your question, Dee!
SeafoamJade says
Is there something that I can use to replace the can of diced tomatoes? I'm not supposed to eat seeds, but I would still like to get the same tomato flavor (and soupy texture, too, if possible).
Em Beitel says
Hi there! Tomato sauce would also work great for taste and texture as a seedless option. Thank you so much for your question.

We have an old family recipe VERY similar to this one that we add Bean with Bacon soup to and it is a delicious addition.
Em Beitel says
That sounds incredible, Jo! Adding beans and bacon is something we'll have to try.
Cyrene says
This was so easy and so delicious! I didn’t have any canned tomatoes, so I used half a 24 oz jar of Rao’s marinara sauce instead of the tomato paste and canned tomatoes. Yummy! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe.
Em Beitel says
Thanks so much, Cyrene! That's awesome! We're so glad you enjoyed it.
