Keto Beef and Broccoli Ingredients
- flank steak or chuck roast, finely sliced against the grain
- broccoli florets
- beef broth
- garlic, minced
- fresh ginger, minced
- vegetable oil
- onion powder
- crushed chili pepper or paprika
- fish sauce
- coconut aminos
- arrowroot powder, optional (to thicken the sauce)
- sesame seeds, optional
How to Make Beef and Broccoli (Instant Pot)
- Turn on the sauté program of your Instant Pot and add vegetable oil to the pot. Cook finely sliced flank steak until browned, making sure to not overcrowd the pot, then remove the steak to a plate.
- Combine ginger, garlic, onion powder, crushed chili pepper, beef broth, coconut aminos (or soy sauce), and 2-3 Tablespoons of fish sauce (to taste) in a bowl. Add this mixture to the pot, then add the beef back in and stir well.
- Secure the Instant Pot lid and cook for 10 minutes on HIGH pressure.
- While the beef cooks, steam or boil broccoli florets for 2-3 minutes. The broccoli should be tender, but still slightly crisp.
- Carefully quick release pressure once the 10 minutes is up, guarding your hand with a dish towel or oven mitt.
- If you're using it, combine ½ tablespoon of arrowroot powder with just a little bit of cold water. Add this mixture to the beef and stir to thicken the sauce.
- Add the broccoli to the pot and stir to mix together completely. Serve the beef and broccoli sprinkled with sesame seeds, additional crushed chili pepper, or paprika. You can also pair it with cauliflower!
Beef and Broccoli Recipe Tips
- Choose the right beef: Choose tender cuts of beef like flank steak or chuck roast for the best results.
- Slicing the beef: When you're slicing the beef, make sure to cut against the grain.
- Don't overcrowd the pot: Brown the beef in batches if needed to avoid any overcrowding in the pot.
- Garnish the dish: Sprinkle beef and broccoli with sesame seeds, crushed chili pepper, or paprika for a finishing touch.
Beef and Broccoli Recipes FAQ
Most soy sauces are low in carbs and can be incorporated safely into a keto meal plan. Always check the label to confirm! In the case of this recipe, we use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce to keep it gluten-free and lower sodium.
Coconut aminos come from the sap of coconut blossoms. They are a gluten-free, low-sodium soy sauce substitute, containing almost 70% less sodium than regular soy sauce.
You can find coconut aminos in your local grocery store, typically in the same aisle as the spices and seasonings. Or they are often located in the international aisle next to the soy sauce, or in the section dedicated to health or dietary foods.
Arrowroot powder is a flavorless powder used as a thickener for sauces, soups, and more. Arrowroot powder is available at most major grocery stores. A common substitute for arrowroot powder is tapioca or cornstarch. However, arrowroot powder is not necessary for making this keto broccoli recipe. It only serves as a thickener for the beef and broccoli sauce and provides no extra flavor.
The best cut of beef for this keto beef and broccoli dinner is flank steak, sirloin steak, or chuck roast. You'll want a tender cut of meat that's bursting with flavor and easy to slice thinly.

Kathy Woods says
Where do the carbs in this recipe come from?
Em Beitel says
Hi Kathy! The carbs are predominantly from the broccoli.
Cheryl Deger says
Only have frozen broccoli florets in the house. Do you think those would work ok? Thank You.
Em Beitel says
Hi Cheryl! That would work just fine! The broccoli in this recipe is already cooked, so you'll have to cook it, but frozen broccoli cooks surprisingly quickly. You can even steam broccoli in the Instant Pot before cooking the beef, if you'd like, by setting the Instant Pot to High pressure at "0" minutes and steaming the broccoli in a steaming basket or trivet with half a cup of water. Naturally release the steam, then it's good to go. This will take about 10 minutes (sometimes a little less) depending on how long the Instant Pot takes to come to pressure. Otherwise, just use your favorite method of cooking broccoli before adding it to the dish.
