Best Steak Seasoning Recipe
If you know me, you know I love my steak dinners. There is nothing like a perfectly cooked steak with a beautiful crust from seasoning. This is the best homemade dry rub I have ever tried, and trust me - I've tried a lot of steak seasoning ideas! This spice blend is an elevated Montreal Steak Seasoning!
I guarantee you're going to love this easy seasoning for steak. It's so easy to mix up using common spices from your pantry, but the results turn your average steak dinner into an incredible meal. The combination of the sweet and salty blends makes this the best seasoning for steak.
This seasoning is perfection. The sweet and salty combination is just perfect. I will never buy store bought seasoning again!

Spices for Steak
- smoked paprika
- onion powder
- garlic powder
- Kosher salt or sea salt
- red pepper flakes
- cayenne pepper
- brown sugar
Brown sugar is the secret ingredient that makes this rub so unique. You get a nice caramelization when the steak hits the grill. The combination of a little sweet, spicy, and salty takes steak skills to a new level. This is the perfect steak seasoning blend for a great steak.

I have used this seasoning on chicken, turkey, and pork chops and it is just amazing on all proteins.
Beef Steak Seasoning Tips
- Adjust the spice levels: You can use more or less crushed red pepper to adjust the spice level of your seasoning for beef.
- Adjust the sweetness: Use more or less brown sugar to make the steak seasoning a little sweeter or less sweet if you prefer.
- Add more garlic: If you really love garlic (I know I do!), adjust to use more garlic powder for an extra garlicky flavor.
How to Store Seasoning for Steak
- Put homemade steak seasoning in an airtight container with a good lid.
- Please keep it in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight and heat.
- Label the container with the date and name.
- Close the container tightly after each use.
- Use it within 6-12 months for the best flavor.
Seasoning Steak
Liberally sprinkle on all sides with your steak seasoning mix. Pat down the mixture with your hands so the meat soaks it up. This will give your beef a beautiful crust.

Steak Seasoning FAQs
Yes. In all cases, we recommend seasoning your steak before cooking, whether you're grilling out or cooking it on the stovetop. Better yet, leave your steak to soak up the seasonings overnight in the refrigerator! Just make sure to let your steak come to room temperature before cooking it.
Store homemade steak seasoning in an airtight container such as a glass jar. Since this mixture uses brown sugar, you'll need to give it a stir before using it again as it may clump together. Store in a cool, dark place.
Use 1 tablespoon of seasoning per pound of steak.

How do you calculate the per pound and seasoning?
Going for a 12OZ steak
Em Beitel says
Hi James! Use 1 tablespoon of seasoning per pound of steak. So, for a 12 oz. steak, use 3/4ths of a Tablespoon. Enjoy!
Gizmos says
I didn’t have any steak rub and was following your air fry steak recipe - whipped this up in mins (used red chilli flakes instead of red pepper ones) and the flavour on the steaks was ABSOLUTELY to die for. Thank you - that will now be forever saved and stored. Try it guys - you will not be disappointed!
